Local Information
A Long and Varied History
Originally a forest, the settlement that grew up in the 8th century was named after the region of a EUROS Haemelea EUROS TM and it appears in the Doomsday Book as a EUROS Hamelamesedea EUROS TM. Over the centuries, this later evolved into a EUROS Hamelhamsteda EUROS TM, with the latter part of the name having links with the word homestead.
Situated close to St Albans, Hemel Hempstead has Roman as well as Norman roots, so much so that St Mary's Church in the wonderful Gadebridge Park is a 12th century Norman church and has one of the highest spires in Western Europe.
As a small agricultural hamlet, Hemel Hempstead was granted a Charter and so Market Town status by King Henry VIII. Its more recent history is after World War II and as part of the population expansion in the London area, Hemel Hempstead was redeveloped as one of the original 'New Towns' in 1949.
So Much on Your Doorstep
Today, Hemel Hempstead has a population of over 80,000 and attracts a mix of families, retired individuals and couples, as well as young professionals.
